Somerset originally came under the authority of the bishop of However Sherborne, Wells became the seat of his own bishop of Wells 909. Bath King William Rufus granted a royal physician, John Villula, Bishop of Wells and Abbot of Bath, which allowed him to move his headquarters for Wells in Somerset Bath in 1090, becoming the first bishop of Bath. He planned and began a church, the cathedral more large, which was attached a priory, with the bishop's palace next.
In 1197, Bishop Savaric FitzGeldewin officially moved its headquarters to the Abbey of Glastonbury, with the approval of Pope Celestine III. However, the monks would not accept their new Bishop of Glastonbury and the title of Bishop of Bath and Glastonbury has been used to assert Glastonbury was abandoned in 1219. His successor Joscelin of Wells, then returned to Bath, again under the title, Bishop of Bath. The official title became Episcopal Bishop of Bath and Wells, under a papal decree of January 3, 1245.
In the 15th century, Bath Cathedral was in poor condition. Oliver King, Bishop of Bath and Wells, decided in 1500 to rebuild on a smaller scale. The new cathedral was completed just a few years before Bath Priory was dissolved in 1539. Then Henry VIII considered the New Cathedral redundant and sold to the public bath to form his parish church. The last bishop in communion with Rome was deprived in 1559, but the succession of bishops has continued until today.
The diocese and the bishops are now part of the Anglican Communion.
In popular culture
Fiction bishops of the title appear repeatedly in the TV comedy Blackadder the BBC. In The Foretelling the first episode of the Black Snake, Edmund incorrectly said the bishop as one of the people killed in battle. The money episode of Blackadder II has a violent psychotic and is described as "colossal pervert" bishop of articles called "The Baby-Eating Bishop of Bath and Wells. "Others are mentioned in at least two sketches from Monty Python and other power in the BBC Radio Comedy Absolute.
Niel Gaiman 2008 The work of the Reserve Cemetery has a character named Bishop of Bath and Wells – which is one of a trio of vampires that has the main character of the hotel.
